Blackboard Quick Tip: Limit the Send Email Tool

Today’s tip is not required, but an “extra feature” that may prevent some online-teaching headaches.

You can change the tool availability within your Blackboard course to better fit how your students will be using the tool.  It’s hard to picture that without showing it, so here’s what I mean — you can force your students to pick an email recipient from a list rather than email-blast the whole roster.

By default, the email tool provides a lot of options, including some confusing red herrings we’ll likely not use in any MCC course (like “send email to all teaching assistant users).

You can customize this help enforce that students need to select their instructor (not all instructors) or classmate (not all classmates) when sending course-related email. Here’s how (click on screenshots to enlarge).

1) In the Control Panel, go to Customization > Tool Availability.

tool12) Scroll down the tool list until you reach email, then click on the chevron to edit.

3) In email settings, deselect the needless options, leaving just “select users” — or perhaps select users and all students, whatever you think works — available.

tool3You’ll still be able to see all these options, but the students will be restricted to whatever you’ve just made available.
