Blackboard Quick Tip: Adding Manually Graded Items to the Grade Center

One of Blackboard Learn’s advantages over our retiring LMS, ANGEL, is its automatic creation of grade center columns (“gradebook assignments” in ANGEL). When you add a point value to an item (dropbox, quiz, etc.), it automatically creates a column in the Full Grade Center. But what if you need to input grades that don’t come from stuff within Blackboard?

For attendance, in-class activity or outside-Blackboard activity (like a publisher’s website), you can create a manual-input column. Here’s how.

1) In Full Grade Center, create a column that you’ll use for manual input. No need to create an “assignment” (something the students will see from under Lessons) for the auto-column creation; you can also create a column for manual grade input.

Click "Create Column" in the upper left of the Full Grade Center.

Click “Create Column” in the upper left of the Full Grade Center.

2) If you’d like, you can assign a due date here so that completion of the outside-Blackboard work (or attendance for a certain class period, et cetera) by a certain time will also appear on the calendar and the students’ task lists (without being an item visible from the Lessons menu).

The “Create Column” screen.

3) You can then manually enter the students’ scores in the Full Grade Center by clicking on the cell (like the Grade Entry Grid in ANGEL, but easier, I think).

It’s pretty easy to manually input grades in the Full Grade Center. Click the cell and type in the score.
